Florida Abortion Law Ectopic pregnancy
Florida’s current abortion law—banning most abortions after six weeks—has raised significant concerns, especially around emergency care for conditions like ectopic pregnancies. However, the state has issued emergency rules clarifying that treatment for ectopic pregnancies is not considered an abortion under the law.
This clarification came after reports, including one from Rep. Kat Cammack, who shared that doctors hesitated to treat her ectopic pregnancy due to legal uncertainty shortly after the law took effect.
The law does allow exceptions to save the mother’s life or prevent serious physical harm, but confusion among providers has led to delays in care.
The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration emphasized that treating ectopic pregnancies and similar emergencies is permitted and should not be delayed. Still, the chilling effect on medical professionals remains a point of contention.
